Lone Leaf – Allaire State Park, Howell, New Jersey

Along the shores of a small pond in Allaire State Park, Melissa and I found these strange leaves, changing for the fall, at the top of a single “branch.” The leaf was a good 5-6 feet up on and at least 6 inches wide. I don’t know what kind of tree grows like this, but it seems to be a new growth with it’s first priority being getting one large leaf grown to start making food. I thought it was fascinating and beautiful among the surrounding reeds in the marshy shores of this pond.
